KEY POINTS:
The print edition of the New Zealand Herald is attracting 9000 more readers a day than this time last year, according to latest readership research.
While other papers have seen falls in the 12 months to June 30 in the Nielsen Research survey, the Herald's gain equates to an extra audience daily which is bigger than a full South Stand at Eden Park.
The Herald's 2 per cent rise in average readership means four of its daily issues - Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday - now individually have bigger readerships than the next best read paper in the country.
On average, 558,000 people read the print edition daily.
The Herald on Sunday recorded a slight drop, from 319,000 to 317,000 but retained its place as the best read Sunday paper in Auckland and also went ahead of the opposition for the Northern region, north of Taupo.
The Sunday Star-Times fell steeply - down 34,000 readers to just 544,000 despite its nationwide circulation - and the Sunday News was down by 42,000 readers or more than 10 per cent to 354,000.
For other metropolitan papers, the Otago Daily Times was up slightly to 111,000, the Press, Christchurch dropped by 13,000 to 221,000, the Dominion-Post in Wellington fell by 10,000 to 245,000 and the Waikato Times rose by 4000 to 95,000 readers.
