KEY POINTS:
Herald on Sunday journalists scooped the three major news prizes - and the biggest individual award of the night - at this year's Qantas Awards.
David Fisher was named reporter of the year and won a three-month Qantas Fellowship to Wolfson College at Cambridge University.
Fisher's winning portfolio included a story of New Zealand's biggest welfare fraudster and how he turned a $3.2 million con into gold bars and bricks of cash which he stashed in his modest Auckland flat.
Catherine Woulfe was named junior reporter of the year, with a portfolio that included an expose on driving licence system cheats and an investigation into teachers with histories of violence, theft and sex abuse of students still being allowed to teach.
Photographer Janna Dixon took out the news trifecta by winning the prize for best breaking news picture - a startling image of the Kahui parents at the graveside of their murdered twin boys.
Editor Shayne Currie said the achievements were outstanding. "The dedication of all of our reporters - and the entire editorial staff - to firmly establish the Herald on Sunday as a news force has been exceptional."
The Herald on Sunday won 11 awards and was a finalist in five other categories. Sports editor Paul Lewis was named sports feature writer and sports columnist of the year, Jane Phare was a finalist for best feature writer and photographer Chris Skelton was finalist in best sports picture.
