The driver of a car that crashed off Hamilton's Cobham Bridge into the Waikato River, resulting in three deaths, was one of two prison inmates assaulted last week.
It is understood Whiti Hepi, 22, suffered facial injuries in an attack in an exercise yard at Waikeria Prison, south of Te Awamutu, on Monday.
Hepi is serving 7 1/2 years after pleading guilty in the High Court at Hamilton in July to three charges of manslaughter.
Public Prisons Service Waikato-Central regional manager Harry Hawthorn confirmed an inmate had been injured in an incident at the prison on Monday.
He said the injuries were not serious and no charges were laid.
Another Waikeria inmate was taken to Waikato Hospital with stab wounds on Thursday.
A sharpened screwdriver went through the man's arm into his chest and punctured a lung.
A St John ambulance spokesman said a man had been taken to Waikato Hospital suffering moderate injuries.
Corrections Association president Bevan Hanlon said the incidents came eight weeks after tension in the jail nearly led to a riot.
He said 14 Waikeria staff had resigned in the past month.
