Help pours in as girl, 12, fights for her life

The family of a schoolgirl run over by a truck are being inundated with messages of support, donations and offers of assistance as they wait anxiously to see if she will pull through.

Jacqueline Wyatt, 12, remained in a critical condition late yesterday after she fell from her bicycle and went under the wheels of the truck while cycling to school in Blenheim on Thursday. She suffered a broken pelvis and serious internal injuries.

Although still critical in Starship hospital, Jacqueline was "doing really well", said her mother, Paulette Wyatt.

"She's had her operation on her pelvis to fix it. So she's not out of the woods yet ... but she's holding up. She's a pretty tough kid."

The family had not been able to speak to her while she was being kept sedated.

The Wyatt family were forced to scrape together what money they could when Jacqueline had to be flown to Auckland.

Money was raised by the family's school community to fly Jacqueline's father, Andy Wyatt, up to Auckland yesterday to be at his daughter's bedside.

The Herald has received a number of emails from readers offering the family accommodation or donations of money. Mrs Wyatt said there had been a constant stream of calls and texts offering support.

"We've just had a fantastic man turn up here [at Starship] - we don't who he is - who gave an envelope over the counter and walked out again. And it had money in it.

"I can't believe how generous people are."
