Rotorua school-leavers will soon have more options open to them.
From next year, five communities in New Zealand will run youth transition services that offer school-leavers support to move into work, training or further education.
The Government will set up the service in 14 communities, including Rotorua, over the next three years at a cost of $26.9 million.
Services will be contracted to existing community-based organisations working with employers and training organisations, to provide customised support and career planning.
Social Development and Employment Minister Steve Maharey said the new service helped to fulfil a Government commitment shared with the Mayors' Taskforce for Jobs - that by 2007, all 15- to 18-year-olds would be in employment or training leading to long-term economic independence.
