A young Swiss climber in a party of climbers in the three passes area near the headwaters of the Arahura River, between Browning Pass and Arthur's Pass, had to be rescued yesterday after suffering a nasty fall.
The 30-year-old man was with a party of New Zealanders, including an emergency department doctor, when he fell in the headwaters of the Cronin River and Glacier in the Whitehorn Pass area, near the Harmen and Pope passes, about midday.
NZCC West Coast Rescue Helicopter manager Angus Taylor said they were notified by the Rescue Co-ordination Centre about 1pm after the climbing party set off a personal locator beacon.
Mr Taylor said the injured man had tumbled down through rocks, suffering nasty lacerations to his hand, and bumps and bruises as a result of the fall.
"He was with an emergency department doctor. She had a good look at him and decided he needed to get out of there."
