KEY POINTS:
Two people received minor injuries when their helicopter crashed at Te Kowhai, just north of Hamilton, this afternoon.
Fire Service spokesman Jaron Phillips told NZPA the Robinson R22 helicopter carrying the pair crashed in Limmer Road, Te Kowhai, about 1pm.
"The neighbour reported that the helicopter had crashed," Mr Phillips said.
"When they initially phoned they were a bit concerned because no one had got out of the chopper."
However, two people suffering minor injuries had since been removed from it.
It was not known whether their injuries were bad enough to warrant hospital treatment, Mr Phillips said.
The Fire Service was at the scene dealing with spilt fuel, he said.
The helicopter with two people on board made what one witness described as a "heavy landing" on an uncontrolled airfield near Hamilton.
No one was injured in the incident, which happened at the Te Kowhai airstrip -- about five kilometres northwest of Hamilton -- just after 1pm.
A woman directing traffic near the scene said no one had seen the helicopter coming in but it had "made an arrival rather than a landing".
"It wasn't a crash it was more a heavy landing," she said.
Staff at MircoAviation -- based at the Limmer Rd airfield -- were in their offices when the landing took place.
Emergency services were sent to the scene but were not needed.
