Helicopter brought in to battle scrub fire in Paihia, Bay of Islands

A helicopter was needed to help battle a scrub fire in the Bay of Islands this afternoon.

A Fire Service spokeswoman said the blaze was reported just before 3.30pm.

It was called to the scene near Greys Lane, in Paihia.

Firefighters could not access the site, so a helicopter was brought in to douse the flames.

The spokeswoman said the scrub fire measured about 20m by 10m.

Firefighters remained at the scene armed with forestry backpacks, to assist the helicopter crew.
