A case of assault with a hedgehog was adjourned today after the non-appearance of a defence witness.
William Singalargh, 27, of Whakatane, has denied throwing a hedgehog at a 15-year-old boy hitting him on the hip and leaving a large red welt and several puncture marks.
The unusual nature of the case has resulted in national and international coverage and print and television media were present in Whakatane District Court today to cover the hearing.
But the case was adjourned after a witness, defence counsel Rebecca Plunket said was pivotal to their case failed to turn up.
Judge David Ongley issued a warrant for the arrest of the witness from Mt Maunganui and adjourned the hearing until May 29.
The judge ordered that when the witness appeared on the warrant he would be bailed to appear on the new date.
Following a lengthy discussion, TV3 was given permission to film proceedings.
