KEY POINTS:
Police are warning motorists to take extreme caution as heavy weather makes driving hazardous throughout the top of the North Island.
Inspector William Taylor said "very heavy" weather was affecting the Northland, Auckland and Manukau regions, with high winds, heavy rain and thunderstorms making roads treacherous.
"Driving conditions have become marginal and motorists are urged to take extreme care when travelling to compensate for the conditions, this includes slowing down and increasing the following distance behind other road users," he said.
