Police say they have been advised of heavy traffic on State Highway 25 as Easter weekend holidaymakers head back to Auckland.
There is reportedly congestion stretching for several kilometres from State Highway 2 back towards Thames.
Police say the situation could be helped if light vehicles heading north take an alternate route via Miranda Road or the Waitakaruru road along the coast.
Heavy traffic flows are also being experienced on State Highway 1, with a 10-kilometre queue in the Kaiwaka area.
Motorists are asked to be patient and to drive to the conditions.
