Queenstown schools were closed and drivers were urged to take extreme care on central South Island roads after heavy snow fell in the area.
The MetService had issued a severe weather warning for inland Canterbury north of Twizel. Another 3-6cm of snow was expected to accumulate above 400 metres before midday.
Rain and snow are expected to fall tonight throughout the central South Island, while the Southern Alps south of Mt Cook are expected to experience fine weather.
Concerns for children travelling to school prompted Queenstown Primary School and Wakatipu High School to close for the day, and police urged people not to use the roads unless necessary.
