MetService has issued a severe weather warning for northern Northland.
It said a small low developing north of New Zealand was expected to move southwards this afternoon.
with a cloud band near the low becoming
more active as it approaches Northland in a strengthening, humid
northeast flow.
The band of frontal rain was likely to become heavy for a time from late this afternoon through to early Saturday morning, a spokesman said.
Heaviest falls should be confined to areas north of Paihia with 50mm to 70mm possible in a 6 to 9 hour period.
Further south, lower amounts of rain were expected.
