Nelson residents are being urged to prepare for heavy rain.
MetService has issued a severe weather warning for the ranges of northwest Nelson, Buller and Westland.
Council spokesman Alec Louverdis said residents should clear leaves and other rubbish from any stormwater grills near their property.
He said if they're blocked, rain water can quickly build up, adding to the risk of flood damage.
Mr Louverdis said council staff can't get to every stormwater drain in the city, so residents play an important role in helping to minimise surface flooding.
