KEY POINTS:
Northern parts of Canterbury are set for a pasting of heavy rain and Metservice is warning of flash floods.
Forecaster Mark Pascoe said a slow moving depression is moving east of the South Island, bringing large downpours to Canterbury and the Kaikoura coast this morning.
"In the 10 hours from 7am to 5pm Tuesday, up to 65mm could fall there, mainly south of the Clarence River," Mr Pascoe said.
He said rain will ease in north Canterbury this afternoon.
Today's rain comes on the back of a heavy lashing last night that left surface flooding in the Weka Pass in north Canterbury and Castle Hill in the Selwyn District.
Police issued a warning to motorists last night that there were reports of small slips and debris on the road around the Weka Pass.
In the Castle Hill area on State Highway 73, a local farmer told police that a bridge had been washed out and there had been flash flooding and slips.
