Heavy rain is set to hit much of the country today with the MetService issuing a watch for Northland, Auckland, Waikato, the central North Island and the eastern coast of the South Island.
A low over the Tasman Sea is expected to cross the southern North Island tonight. An associated front should cross the North Island today bringing a period of heavy rain to many areas.
MetService forecaster Erick Brenstrum said a rainfall warning is in place for the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne north of Ruatoria.
Up to 120mls of rain could fall in a period of 12 to 18 hours today, Mr Brenstrum said.
"People in these areas are advised to watch out for surface flooding, slips and rapidly rising streams and rivers, and keep up to date with the latest forecasts," Mr Brenstrum said.
"A period of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms is expected to also affect Northland, Auckland, Waikato, the upper slopes of Mount Taranaki, the high ground from Mount Taranaki across to Ruapehu, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa," Mr Brenstrum said.
The South Island is also in for another dumping with heavy rain forecast for Nelson and Marlborough this afternoon.
The rain is forecast to spread to the Kaikoura Coast and northern Canterbury tonight.
