The top of the South Island should brace itself for some stormy weather today.
The Metservice has issued a severe weather warning ahead of a low in the Tasman Sea that will bring heavy, thundery rain to parts of Nelson, northern Marlborough and Taranaki today.
The heavy rain will also hit the Bay of Plenty ranges and central high country - adding to already significant rainfall. Those living in these areas are warned for rising rivers and streams.
The Metservice warns surface flooding and slips are likely around Nelson and northern Marlborough.
