Motorists in lower North Island are being warned to take care as heavy rain and strong wind lash the area this afternoon.
Police said the severe weather was likely to affect people travelling on State Highway 1 between Wellington and the Central Plateau.
"There are currently strong winds and heavy rain causing poor visibility throughout the area."
Police urged motorists getting away for the long Labour Weekend to drive with caution and allow more time for their trip.
The strong winds have caused delays and cancellations at Wellington Airport today.
