Rush hour commuters observed an odd episode in one MP's campaign this week.
Labour list MP Carol Beaumont was ordered out of Onehunga railway station - by a message broadcast over the station's PA system. "She looked a bit sheepish when the announcement came on and slunk off," a commuter said.
But Beaumont said she'd already left before the message aired. "We'd finished giving out leaflets and talking to people who were on the 8:15."
She said the station's response, including a threat to call security, was heavy-handed. "I think a few people in the train were somewhat perturbed as well."
Auckland Transport technically owns station platforms. Spokesman Wally Thomas said campaigning was allowed at public transport hubs. "Really, we're just asking [MPs] to be mindful that these are thoroughfares."
