Heavy fog causes problems for travellers at Christchurch and Dunedin airports

At least one flight has been diverted after flights at two South Island airports were hampered by heavy fog across two southern cities this morning.

Air New Zealand and Jetstar have suspended boarding flights at Christchurch Airport as thick fog makes flying in and out of the southern travel hub too dangerous.

Dunedin Airport is also affected by fog with some flights delayed this morning.

Air New Zealand has tweeted that a number of domestic flights in and out of Christchurch had been affected by the adverse weather conditions.

A flight from Rotorua had been diverted to Wellington due to fog.

A number of other flights between Christchurch and the rest of New Zealand continued to be disrupted.

Christchurch Airport spokeswoman Yvonne Densem said boarding was suspended after conditions worsened around 9.30am.

Some flights, including international carriers, had been able to land and depart this morning and all delayed flights were running by 11am.

She was not able to say how many had been affected in total.

Fog also plagued air travel just over a fortnight ago. Today's fog initially blanketed much of the southern city but has started to clear.
