Heavy fog causes flight cancellations, traffic delays in Christchurch

Heavy fog in Christchurch this morning will affect flights in and out of the city today, a spokeswoman from Christchurch Airport has confirmed.

A flight from Auckland into the city was cancelled this morning, as was one from Hamilton.

Meanwhile, a flight from Christchurch to Nelson, scheduled at 8.45am, was also cancelled.

Other flights due to land in Christchurch from Nelson, Wellington, New Plymouth and Tauranga had to be diverted to Wellington.

The fog is also causing some traffic congestion around the city.

Local transport authorities are warning motorists to turn on their headlights and to keep a good distance between vehicles.
