Amendments to the vehicle mass rules have worried some car drivers, who fear bigger trucks on our roads.
But the reality is not too radical. The main thrust of the proposed amendment would allow some specially permitted high-productivity vehicles to tip the scales at 53 tonnes - not the current 44 - on specified major routes.
Assuming a truck weight of 19 tonnes and a payload under current regulations of 25, the change will allow the biggest trucks to carry a third more cargo, which could reduce the number clogging our roads.
Vehicles affected are already rated to 60 tonnes. But heavier trucks will undoubtedly take longer to stop and drivers will be slower in hilly terrain. Companies will also have to be more careful about securing their load.
However, fewer trucks means less congestion on major highways and could mean lower transport costs.
