When Hope Henderson is old enough to understand, her grandparents will explain.
But for now, "Mummy is up in the stars looking down on her".
Rachel and Dave Beavan have had custody of the 16-month-old since her mother, Samantha Henderson, died in December. They have kept a file of police documents, ACC and coroner letters and newspaper clippings.
"For now, she's just a bubba who's lost her mum," Mrs Beavan told the Weekend Herald from the Pakiri Beach home they have put on the market.
It has been a horrific seven months for the family, who are moving out of the area "to make a brand-new start".
Hope, while a blessing, was a constant reminder of her mother, Mrs Beavan said.
"I can see Sam everywhere with Hope, just the inquisitive little person she is."
Meanwhile, the toddler, decked out in a baby pink tracksuit with a white fluffy collar, was peering behind the couch at the family's puppy, her favourite glowbug toy in tow.
"It was the last thing Sam bought for her," Mrs Beavan said.
