Most New Zealanders believe the public health system is inefficient, with managers and hospital bureaucracy gobbling up most of the extra funding during the past five years, a survey shows.
The New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development survey, carried out by ShapeNZ, surveyed 747 people and 52 per cent believed public health was inefficient, while 43 per cent thought increased health spending in the past five years had gone on managers and hospital bureaucracy.
Just 12 per cent believed most increased funding had gone into health services and treatments, while 29 per cent thought the service was efficient. Six per cent of those questioned said hospital services should not befree.
