A new study from the University of Colombia of 500 families who contain two or more relatives with epilepsy, shows there is a genetic link between epilepsy and migraines.
In families that had three or more members who experienced seizures, those without epilepsy were more than two times more likely to experience migraines with aura; a migraine compounded by loss of vision, facial numbness, flashing lights or speech problems.
Speaking to the BBC, deputy chief executive at Epilepsy Action, Simon Wigglesworth applauded the study. "Having a better understanding of the genetic link between epilepsy and other medical conditions can only be a good thing.
"It means that steps can be taken to improve diagnosis and treatment for people living epilepsy and co-existing conditions. By understanding how genes work, more targeted treatments could be developed in the future."
