Do you shop at a big discount supermarket? New research suggests you could be bigger for doing so.
French researchers have revealed people who shop at discount supermarkets in poorer areas have a higher body-mass index (BMI) and waist circumference than shoppers at other supermarkets.
Published in science journal Public Library of Science One, the research was initially carried out to ascertain whether supermarkets could be part of healthy eating interventions.
After surveying over 7,000 people in Paris, it was discovered that people from low socio-economic areas that had lower education levels tended to shop at big discount supermarkets.
At the other end of the scale, people with a higher education who lived in a better socio-economic area tended to shop at local organic and health food stores and subsequently had a lower BMI and slimmer waist line.
