A hazardous chemical spill on a vessel at Lyttelton Port today did not endanger staff or the environment, the port says.
A container on a vessel berthed at the port was found to be leaking this morning, Lyttelton Port operations manager Paul Monk said.
The ship's cargo manifests stated it contained a Class 8 hazardous substance.
Mr Monk said there was no danger to staff or marine and animal life, but a no-go-zone cordon has been set up around the area as a precaution.
Firefighters and the harbourmaster are coordinating the clean-up on the vessel.
