Hawke's Bay woman shot in the face

A Hawke's Bay woman is in intensive care after being shot in the face last night.

The shooting happened at a house on farmland near Kereru, 20km southwest of Hastings, about 6.10pm.

The woman, in her 30s, was airlifted to Hawke's Bay Hospital where she remained last night.

Police said there were a number of other people in the house at the time of the shooting, one of whom called emergency services.

Neighbours, who said an engaged couple in their 30s lived at the house, were shocked and upset at news of the shooting.

At least six police cars were at 123 Poporangi Rd last night. Rupert Gaddum, farm manager at Tuapae Farms, was one of those listed as living at the address. There are several houses on the property.

Last night Gaddum's family were anxiously awaiting news.

"I can't get hold of anyone at all," said his brother.

Police were investigating several possibilities, including that the woman accidentally shot herself, said central communications Inspector Paul Jermy. People were cooperating.
