Local DJ Sneeky (Sophie England) is doing a 12 hour DJ at Common Room in Hastings to create a safe, fun space and raise funds for local community organisations.
DJ Sneeky will play an epic 12-hour DJ set at an event called Live Like a Lotus at the Common Room in Hastings on Saturday, February 17.
Local DJ Sneeky, aka Sophie England, said the event aims to create a safe and fun space for the community to gather and have a boogie to some feel-good tracks.
England said it hopes it will remind us of all the good things in life – “from a funky beat to the people around us, friends old and new.”
England chose these three organisations because of their positive impact on the hauora of our community in Te Matau a Māui Hawke’s Bay and to tautoko (support) the work that they do.
Entry to Live Like a Lotus is by gold coin donation. There will be raffles on the day, with prizes which have been donated by the community.
The entire event will also be live-streamed.

Unison programme teaches kids to be ‘Safe Sparks’
Electricity distributor, Unison Networks (Unison) is launching a digital safety education programme to increase awareness of safety around electricity within its communities through a new animated and interactive online programme for schools.
Unison has delivered its face-to-face ‘Safe Sparks’ programme in schools for over 21 years, helping children understand the dangers of electricity.
Safe Sparks covers topics such as identifying electricity in the home, understanding how it is made, and developing skills to stay safe around it. It also includes important information on Unison’s electrical assets in the community such as power poles, lines and boxes.
The digital Safe Sparks programme will serve as a valuable resource for school teachers to introduce children to electricity safety or as a refresher in between visits from Unison’s in-person Safe Sparks team. It is accessible, free of charge for all primary schools in Unison’s Hawke’s Bay, Taupō and Rotorua network regions.
Unison Group General Manager People, Safety and Culture Rachel Masters says the increasing use of technology in education and the restrictions Covid-19 brought, Unison saw the opportunity to bring its important safety messages to school children in a new and interactive way.
”Electricity safety is a serious matter, and we believe that educating children at a young age saves lives. We hope that by making this programme available digitally, we can reach even more children with our safety messages.”

Free earthquake and tsunami workshops
Experts will be travelling through Hawke’s Bay bringing the science of our largest and most active fault to communities in free workshops.
The Hikurangi Subduction Zone runs the length of the east coast of the North Island and is Aotearoa’s largest source of earthquake and tsunami hazard.
For communities living on its front line, it poses an invisible but ever-present danger.
The Hikurangi is capable of producing a magnitude 9 earthquake and a large tsunami which could arrive within minutes of the initial earthquake.
”It sounds overwhelming, but we know from Japan in 2011, that when people are prepared and act quickly, they can get through.” said East Coast LAB | Hikurangi M9′s Project Leader, Georgia McCombe.
“The Japan 2011 earthquake and tsunami was also caused by a subduction zone, similar to ours, but because people were well prepared and evacuated in time, 95 per cent of people survived.
”The Hikurangi M9 Roadshow will be visiting Hawke’s Bay and Tararua sometime in February and March, and every event will be free and open to all, thanks to the support of Toka Tū Ake EQC.
People are encouraged to bring their friends and whānau and take this opportunity to learn about the science and what it means for them and their community, and importantly, how they can prepare.
Dates for each location will be announced shortly, and further information can be found on East Coast LAB | Hikurangi M9′s Facebook page and website.
