Hastings warning over door knockers

Police in Hastings are urging people to report incidents where people knock on their door asking to use the phone or toilet.

It comes after a 15-year-old girl was apprehended last night when an elderly man contacted police concerned about her attempts to gain access to his York St home to use his phone.

Acting Sergeant Glen Yule said if elderly people in particular were faced with a situation where strangers tried to talk their way into their homes they should call police.

The girl in question was being dealt with by Youth Aid.
