A 34-year-old Hastings man has died while diving at a remote beach in central Hawke's Bay.
Barney Akurangi was diving with a friend at Pourerere Beach yesterday afternoon when he got into trouble.
Mr Akurangi's friend spotted him floating on the surface of the water and tried to resuscitate him before going for help.
Sergeant Ross Gilbert of Waipukurau Police says the pair were diving close to the shore in shallow water.
The National Dive Squad are investigating to establish cause of death.
