A Havelock North man received only moderate injuries after the forage harvester he was driving collided with a goods train south of Hastings last night.
The accident on a level crossing at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Stock Road involved the harvester, believed to be towing a ute, and a south-bound train.
The harvester was spun 90 degrees and badly damaged.
Its driver was treated at the scene by St John's Ambulance staff, before being taken to Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital with moderate head and leg injuries. He is described as being in a comfortable condition.
Police are investigating the accident.
Toll Holdings spokeswoman Sue Foley said the lights and bells at the controlled crossing were "definitely" working.
