KEY POINTS:
Two Waitemata Harbour ferries collided during a berthing manoeuvre at the Downtown Terminal on Tuesday.
A Fullers Group spokesman said no passengers were on board.
One vessel, Fullers' Wanderer, suffered damage to woodwork above the stern and was unable to complete its scheduled 6.20pm service to Birkenhead and Northcote Pt.
Its passengers were taken on by another ferry bound for Half Moon Bay.
The spokesman described it as a minor accident and declined further comment pending a routine investigation into the cause by Maritime New Zealand.
A concerned witness at the terminal, Jude Widdowson, told the Herald that a vessel made four attempts to berth when it suddenly reversed into another vessel.
"Waiting passengers looked on in horror and people shouted 'stop'. It didn't."
