It's officially the moment of the fashion sneaker, with luxury versions of the street favourite appearing at the last bastion of pure luxury, the haute couture shows in Paris.
At Dior last month, designer Raf Simons teamed light-as-air gowns with trainers embellished with hand-beaded flowers, and at Chanel, pictured, models bounded the runway wearing embroidered, jewelled and lace sneakers to match their couture outfits (each sneaker reportedly took 30 hours to make by hand). The clothing had a sportswear mood too, reflecting fashion's current inclination of loosening up - street style trickling up to the highest levels.
At a more accessible-to-mere-mortals level, streetwear brands Nike, New Balance and Vans continue their reign of popularity. Expect the wear-sneakers-with-everything attitude to continue into the year: Next month, Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci's collaboration with Nike will be released. Although, sadly, it won't be available in New Zealand.
