There have been lots of happy campers pass through Carterton.
Council assets manager Brian McWilliams said Qualmark, which grades camping grounds, reported a string of accolades about the Carterton camp, including "excellent", "great managers" and "very good".
On the strength of this positive feedback, the council is working through projects amounting to more than $12,000 in improvements to the ground and facilities.
These include upgrading the ablution block, extending the camp another 40m north, installing a gazebo and levelling the ground that was turned inside out recently during the search for an elusive traction engine.
Mr McWilliams confirmed the traction engine was never found although bits and pieces were dug up. This was not surprising however, as it was the town's dumping ground for many years in the early 1900s.
Carterton farmer Mike Tatham had hoped to uncover a traction engine that was driven there and dumped with a view to restoring it but many weeks of careful digging could not find it, despite the myriad of advice from many old timers in the town.
