Four artists, three of them Auckland based, the fourth living in London, are in the running for New Zealand's most sought-after art award, the Walters Prize.
Stella Brennan (Wet Social Sculpture 2005, above), Phil Dadson (Polar Projects 2004) and Peter Robinson of Auckland (The Humours 2004) and Francis Upritchard of London (Doomed, Doomed All Doomed 2005, pictured) stand to win $50,000 and a trip to New York to exhibit their works when this year's prize is announced in October.
Established in 2002, the prize honouring artist Gordon Walters aims to bring wider recognition to contemporary art while fostering greater debate in New Zealand society.
The award is modelled on Tate Britain's Turner Prize.
Previous winners of the two-yearly award include et al. in 2004 for Restricted Access and Yvonne Todd in 2002 for Asthma and Eczema.
Hanging on there for the prize of prizes
