KEY POINTS:
Napier police are seeking a youth they say arrived at a city centre park with a hammer to "sort out" an earlier scuffle.
Senior Sergeant Tony Dewhirst said police were called to Clive Square about 4pm on Thursday after reports that there had been a scuffle between members of two groups of teenagers.
It was alleged one person had been assaulted by a youth wielding a hammer, which he had arrived with wrapped in a towel.
Mr Dewhirst said the two groups of youths were in a scuffle earlier in the day.
"It appears to have been all over someone looking at someone else the wrong way."
The groups were moved on by police but there was no sign of the youth who allegedly fronted up with the hammer.
"We are seeking that person today," Mr Dewhirst said.
A workman who had been in the area on Thursday said Clive Square had become a gathering place for groups of youths over the past few weeks.
"Sooner school starts the better," the man said.
