Water supplies are returning to normal after a lightning strike damaged Hamilton's water treatment plant just after midnight.
An electrical storm over the city sent bolts of lightning which damaged computers and alarm systems at the Peacockes Rd water treatment plant which provides the city's fresh water.
The strike led to little or no water for many residents until council engineers repaired the damage after several hours.
Residents in the Hillcrest and Flagstaff areas were particularly affected.
"Water supplies are all back on line, but there may be some minor water quality issues," said Tim Harty, manager of City Waters.
The lightning also damaged alarm systems and council staff had to break into some areas.
Mr Harty said people should run taps to flush their pipes, before using water.
