KEY POINTS:
Michael Redman is stepping down as Hamilton mayor -- to become the city council's new chief executive.
The 41-year-old first-term mayor made the shock announcement to fellow councillors this week. He will take over his new role on July 1.
The married father of two cited the "invisible pressures of public office" as a major reason for stepping down, and said he decided to apply for the chief executive position so he could "make a more direct and long-term commitment" to Hamilton.
He told the Waikato Times his 18 years' experience in the commercial world -- mainly in advertising -- and his stint as mayor meant he was well-placed for the new role.
"I think I have what it takes."
Mr Redman has been largely credited with bringing unity to council since his election to office in 2 004.
Mr Redman earned $114,053 a year as mayor. Former chief executive Tony Marryatt was on $346,000 a year after 11 years in the top job.
