Hamilton man dies in crash

An elderly man has died in a collision on the outskirts of Hamilton.

The 84-year-old died when two cars collided at the intersection of Cherry Lane and SH1, Tamahere, about 4.20pm today.

The elderly man was the sole occupant of a vehicle turning onto SH1 from Cherry Lane, Senior Sergeant Gael Mockford said.

"A south bound car on SH1 was involved in the collision and the sole occupant of this vehicle received minor injuries.''

Ms Mockford said it was the second fatal crash at an intersection in Tamahere within two weeks.

"The crash occurred prior to the recent rain received in the Tamahere area. Police urge all drivers to take extreme care at intersections and to adjust to the recent deteriorating weather conditions.

"As we approach Autumn, police are asking road users to adopt a more cautious approach on Waikato roads,'' she said.

"Remember road safety is no accident and too many families have been affected by road trauma already this year.''
