Hamilton man charged with abduction of young woman

A Hamilton man has been charged with abduction and sexual violation.

The 23-year-old appeared in the District Court at Hamilton today and was remanded on bail.

He was arrested following the sexual violation of a 20-year-old local woman over the weekend.

Police said she was waiting for a taxi on Grey St, Hamilton East, in the early hours of Sunday when a car stopped and the driver offered her a ride.

"The woman got into the vehicle and was driven to the northern suburbs of Hamilton, where she was assaulted by the driver."

Detective Sergeant Andrew Mortimore of the Hamilton CIB believed other similar incidents within the greater Hamilton City area may have gone unreported.

"We'd like to hear from anyone who has had a similar experience," he said. "We believe they may have important information that can assist this investigation."
