Waikato and Thames hospitals' $215 million upgrade has won approval from the Government's spending committee and just needs rubber-stamping by the Cabinet.
The redevelopment will be the biggest single piece of construction at both hospitals.
The plans were designed to keep the hospitals up-to-date with clinical practices and the growing population in the region.
