Hamilton Airport has approval to extend its runway so it will be the same size as secondary airports in other parts of the world, such as the Gold Coast.
It's likely to end up just short of three thousand metres long.
There's no time span given on the work being done, but the option to extend the runway has now been approved for the next 15 years.
The change is part of a long term plan reaching out to 2030.
The approvals and recommendations also allow for new taxiways, an extended apron, and associated air noise boundaries changes.
