Followers of fashion could not have missed Hillary Clinton's choice of headwear when she departed Christchurch yesterday.
But New Zealand's top milliners were divided on whether the Grecian-style headband suited the 63-year-old US Secretary of State.
Urban Turban designer Diane Dudley said it did not fit with the rest of Clinton's outfit.
"It sticks out like it's just been stuck there," she said. "It's very bulky. I would have put a flatter band on her, something really simple and classic and probably black."
Natalie Chan, a young milliner in Parnell, Auckland, also thought the band was too thick, as well as being "a little dated".
"However the colour is in vogue with the spring-summer sorbets around at the moment.
"I would have put something more modern, feminine and structured on her, maybe with a little bow."
But Jan Beech, who has created head-pieces since 1957, approved of Clinton's choice.
"It is appropriate for the wind and the rain.
"The most important thing is to dress for the occasion and she has done that."
