A high-end brand of hair straighteners with a cult following could be the reason behind nearly 30 burglaries at Christchurch hair salons over the past few months, police say.
Twenty-seven salons have been broken into since September and police believe the thieves were after GHD (Good Hair Day) hair straighteners, which cost between $259 and $359, TV3 reported.
"Some people have been prosecuted for one or two but the Criminal Investigation Bureau are in the process of tying a lot of those together," said Detective Sergeant Darryl Sweeney.
Headquarters Hairdressers has been hit twice in the past six months.
"I wouldn't have thought it would be an easy target with it being on a main road but we do display the GHDs and [the thieves] just knew what they were looking for," a hairdresser said.
