KEY POINTS:
More allegations have been raised against a Wanganui gynaecologist who botched sterilisation operations, including failing to find the entrance to a woman's uterus.
Frederika Himmel of Wanganui had laparoscopic surgery performed by Dr Roman Hasil, who has been accused of botching six sterilisation operations out of 32 last year. He is under investigation by the Health and Disability Commissioner and is believed to have left the country.
Himmel's surgery was to look for ovarian cysts following a cancer scare. But she syas Hasil was unable to locate the cervix or the entrance to Himmel's uterus and thus unable to find cancer.
She said she had a bizarre conversation with Hasil after the operation. "He rang me and said 'I've drained your ovaries and you don't have ovarian cancer'. I said 'wow that's fabulous'. But he said, 'I couldn't find the entrance to your uterus'. I said, 'you're telling me I don't have a cervix and an entrance to my uterus?... you're telling me I'm the Virgin Mary? I've had two children. It doesn't sound right'."
Hasil said he wanted to do a hysterectomy anyway but unrelated health complications prompted Himmel to turn him down. There was no follow-up appointment or any checking of Hasil's findings, she said.
Himmel is disappointed at the hospital and said it goes right to the top of hospital management. A hospital spokesperson declined to comment.
