GOING, GOING,GONE: At the halfway point for Jacob Skinner.
Jacob Skinner's new curly hair is his symbol of cancer remission.
On Wednesday night, he chose to surrender that in recognition of those who willingly shaved their hair for him when he was being treated for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma this time last year.
As a fundraiser for Shave for a Cure, Jacob, 16, was "balded" at his gym, the Wairarapa Functional Fitness in Masterton, following a cross-fit session and barbecue.
"This time last year, I was diagnosed with cancer," he said.
Two others, gym owner Allan French and member Cathyrine Samuelu, also went for zero cuts, performed by barber Jordy McDowell of Barbershop Jordy.
The Kuranui College student was rushed to Christchurch this time last year for three months of chemotherapy. The college rallied around their classmate, organising fundraising mufti days, walks and runs, car washes and barbecues.
Last April seven of his friends, plus a teacher, shaved their heads as a fundraiser.
The school raised around $4000.
Cathyrine Samuelu, of Featherston, said it was her first night at the fitness centre and did not know Jacob personally.
"I'm doing this for my family who have passed away from cancer.
"When I heard about this happening here, I thought I would come along and support.
"I'm going to be a regular here now."
She said she "liked her hair, but it will grow".
Centre owner Allan French, who is also a Wairarapa police constable, has only just opened the centre.
"This is a community thing, supporting one of our own.
