KEY POINTS:
The man allegedly at the centre of the second incident at an Auckland gunshop within a year will be assessed to see if he is mentally fit to stand trial.
The 32-year-old from Mangere had his name suppressed when he appeared in Auckland District Court today on two charges of assault with a weapon and one of possession of an offensive weapon.
He was charged after allegedly going into Ray Carvell's Small Arms International gunshop in the industrial suburb of Penrose, about 10km south of downtown Auckland, yesterday wielding a knife demanding that Mr Carvell shoot him dead.
Police used pepper spray and a taser to subdue the man after Mr Carvell and shop worker Bruce Motley tried to persuade the man to put down his knife.
The court ordered the accused man to be remanded in custody to Auckland Central Remand Prison, for his mental fitness to stand trial to be assessed.
Mr Carvell's son Greg last year shot Ricky Beckham, who had threatened to kill him while brandishing a metre-long machete above his head.
Beckham recovered from his stomach wound and was jailed for two years and nine months on a charge of aggravated burglary.
Greg Carvell was later charged with unlawful possession of a firearm but the case was thrown out at the depositions stage by justices of the peace.
