A gunman is being sought after residents reported hearing shots fired in a Lower Hutt suburb last night.
Witnesses reported seeing between three and six shots being fired by a person or persons in Waiwhetu around 11.50pm, a police spokesman said.
Detective Sergeant Mike Sears said police were called to an area near Cambridge Terrace and Hawkins Street just before midnight and found a number of spent cartridges.
Mr Sears said police were conducting a scene examination and were talking to residents.
"Police are interested in sightings of two vehicles around the same time last night. These include a white van and a white hatchback. These vehicles were seen leaving the Cambridge Terrace/Hawkins Street area at speed."
No reports of damage or injury have been received.
