"She [Ms Glassie] wound down her window and screamed: 'Call the police, he's going to kill me'."
She said Ginns, who had been in the car behind Ms Glassie's, came up behind the scared woman, who had children in the back seat.
"As I picked up the phone he said: 'If you try and ring the police I will kill you'." She ran out to the back office and locked the door to make the call while the petrol station manager tried to close the security doors on him.
By the time she reappeared they had both driven off and she said police caught up with him a few minutes later and arrested and charged him.
She recalled Ginns going to the petrol station a few times before the incident when she was working and said he was "weird and a real troublemaker".
"Everyone in Tokoroa has run-ins with Jamie Ginns, he was a nut case and I'm glad he's not around to hurt anyone else," she said.
A friend from Ginns' days at Tokoroa High School, who also worked with him later, said he was "a bit wiry".
"Over the last couple of years in Tokoroa he might have been a bit angry ... but when I was hanging out with him he just had a bit of a temper."
Ginns and Ms Glassie both attended Tokoroa High School but were in different circles and didn't know each other until later. They had broken up at the time of the shooting, but both lived at the Dalmeny St address with their three daughters, now being cared for by family members.
"I think for the past 10 years they have had an on and off sort of relationship," the friend said.
Detective Inspector Tim Anderson yesterday said Ginns had a long criminal history including domestic violence and wounding offences.
He had also been carrying a gun unlawfully when he shot Ms Glassie.
Police say the first victim in Ginns' rampage - a 20-year-old woman who was tied up with a black power cord - did not know Ginns.
She had been socialising with a large group of people at a pub in Tokoroa on Thursday night and then continued partying at her house afterwards.
Police said she went with Ginns against her will to his Dalmeny St property where she was seriously assaulted before escaping to the driveway about 6.30 on Friday morning.
Her screaming was heard by neighbours and passersby.

11am - Ginns fires two shots in a high-speed chase following Mata Glassie and her sister
11.30am - Ginns pulls his car up close to Ms Glassie's and shoots her
2pm - Armed offenders squad surround Thompson St house, from where Ginns borrowed a car
4pm - Search moves to Mamaku Forest near Rotorua
7.30pm - Ginns' body found next to the borrowed vehicle in the bush
